Secure data delivery means protecting information from the moment it leaves the drone until the client opens it. The goal is to prevent unauthorized access, accidental exposure, or tampering at every step.

A leaked survey file can expose a client’s construction plans, excavation measurements, or infrastructure locations. For competitors or bad actors, that information has real value. For the provider who leaked it, the consequences include lost contracts, legal liability, and reputational damage.
The financial stakes are high. According to IBM’s 2024 data breach report, the global average cost of a data breach reached $4.88 million in 2024. That figure reflects a 10% increase from the previous year, the largest single-year jump since the pandemic.
Drone professionals take this seriously. In a 2024 survey of drone professionals conducted by Teledyne FLIR among 629 U.S. respondents, 85 percent said data security of the drone was very or somewhat important when selecting a platform. Another 89 percent said they want to choose whether data is sent to the cloud. Clients expect control, and providers need to offer it.

The core methods providers use to deliver data securely
Secure delivery relies on several interlocking methods. None of them works in isolation. A provider that encrypts data but shares it through open links has a gap. A provider that uses permission controls but stores files on an unencrypted USB drive has a gap.

A dedicated cloud platform centralizes data in one controlled location. That is safer than scattering files across email attachments, WeTransfer links, shared drives, and USB sticks.
Scattered files create what security teams call “shadow data.” The same IBM breach study found that over one-third of breaches involved shadow data. When data lives in multiple untracked places, it becomes harder to protect and easier to lose.
The same report found that breaches across multiple environments, including public cloud, private cloud, and on-premises systems, cost more than $5 million on average and took the longest to identify and contain (283 days).
Access controls and permission-based sharing
Access controls determine who can view, download, or edit each piece of data. Permission-based sharing means each client sees only their own projects, not everyone else’s.
This matters because of how attackers get in. According to the 2025 Verizon breach report, the use of compromised credentials was an initial access vector in 22% of the breaches reviewed in the 2025 DBIR. If an attacker steals one user’s login, strong access controls limit the damage, because that user can only reach what they were authorized to see.
Key point: Look for platforms that assign role-based permissions (field, office, client) and support multi-factor authentication (MFA).

In Europe, GDPR governs how personal data must be collected, stored, and shared. Non-compliance is expensive. According to European GDPR enforcement figures tracked by CMS Law, European authorities have issued a total of 2,685 fines amounting to approximately EUR 6.11 billion since 2018. The average fine is roughly EUR 2.28 million, though that figure is heavily skewed by a few landmark penalties.
